Privacy Policy

Last updated · 16 June 2026

Backdrop is private by design. Nothing is captured unless you tap — no background recording, no ambient listening. This policy explains what Backdrop handles when you use it, and the choices you have. Backdrop is an independent project — no company, no investors, no advertisers.

What Backdrop keeps

The things you capture. When you tap the shutter, Backdrop saves the photo or clip you framed, anything you say while you hold to record, and any notes or labels you add. Nothing is captured or saved on its own — only what you choose to keep.

Your account. If you sign in to sync your shelf across devices, Backdrop stores a basic account identifier (such as the email or the sign-in provider you use). Signing in is what lets your shelf follow you to a new device.

Diagnostics. Backdrop may collect limited, aggregated diagnostic information — such as crash reports — to keep the app reliable. It is used only to fix problems, and not to identify you or build a profile.

What Backdrop never does

  • No background capture, no always-on microphone, no ambient tracking.
  • No selling or renting your information, ever.
  • No advertising, no ad profiles, no third-party trackers.
  • No feed, no followers, no audience — your shelf is not public.

How your information is used

Backdrop uses what you keep only to give the app back to you: to store and organize your shelf, sync it across your devices when you sign in, and power features like asking your shelf a question in plain words. Your captures are never used to advertise to you.

Asking your shelf

When you ask Backdrop a question, your request and the items relevant to it are processed to generate an answer drawn from what you actually saved. Answers come from your own shelf — they are never invented, sold, or used to train advertising.

Service providers

To run Backdrop, we rely on a small number of trusted providers — for example, secure cloud storage and authentication so your shelf is safe and syncs, and the service that helps answer your questions. They may process your information only to provide these functions on our behalf, under agreements to protect it. Purchases are handled by Apple under Apple’s own privacy policy. We do not sell your data to anyone.

Keeping and deleting your data

What you keep stays until you remove it. You can delete individual items at any time, and you can delete your entire account — and the content synced with it — from within the app. Some limited records may be retained where required by law or to prevent abuse.

Security

Backdrop protects your information with reasonable safeguards, including encryption in transit and access controls. No method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure, but we work to keep what you keep safe.

Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, and to object to certain processing. You can exercise these rights — and the equivalents under the GDPR and CCPA — by deleting your data in the app or by writing to us at the address below.

Children

Backdrop is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, write to us and we will remove it.

International use

Backdrop may be used from anywhere, and your information may be processed in countries other than your own. Where it is, we take steps to ensure it remains protected under this policy.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we will update the date above and note the change in the app. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.
